An Exercise in Character Building for House of Eidolons:
I have been assembling a character guide with many pre-built options to help new players understand different class builds and options. We wanted to create some ways for new players to quickly get up and going effectively, to give them a real feel for the game without overwhelming them with rules.
I pre-built 24 different characters and categorized them on a 1-9 difficulty scale (1 being easy, 9 being very difficult). I separated the difficulties by brackets: 1-3 = Easy to Play, 4-6 = Moderate Difficulty to Play, and 7-9 = Complicated to Play. There is 1 of each class in each difficulty bracket for a total of 8 pre-built characters in each bracket and 24 in total.
All I have to say is... Holy shit! None of these characters are very similar to one another and are each capable of vastly different things. And this is just a beginning character, before any missions or extra crypt or anything. There are dozens of different ways to take each one of these 24 characters once you start playing them and buying gear. I think we have truly created a TTRPG where you will never play the same character twice without really trying to!
To give some more perspective, 8 different classes with 7 different sub-class options or a focus class for an 8th option equals 256 different combinations... And that does not take into consideration that each class has 3 different ability trees to select from and progress down or in what order and the timing of ability selection from those trees. And none of that considers the gear you decide to use (Heavy Weapons or Light, Ranged or Melee, Cybernetics or Mutations, Drones or Programs, and everything in between)... And that still does not consider how you modify any of that gear or the consumables you use and bring.
I don't think you will find a TTRPG out there that will give you the customizability, tailored play, and power fantasy as House of Eidolons will. I don't think anything on the market comes close. This exercise has driven it home for me, I didn't quite realize the extent of what I have created... haha, this is going to be epic fun!
Soon we will be publishing the character guide on the website. When we do, I encourage you to go take a look at it and see the sort of options that exist. I even made a Sun Wukong street samurai and he is going to play and feel just like that character; flipping, spinning, and dashing around like an agile monkey king!
You don’t need to settle for starting as a shit character in your usual TTRPGs under the false dichotomy of power progression. You can start out playing your power fantasy, get better from there, and still enjoy being challenged because, in House of Eidolons, the power fantasy is untethered from the outcome!
